All forests should be thinned to remain productive, healthy and growing.
Softwood bushes should be thinned every 8-10 years and hardwood bushes every 15-20 years.
The Red pine plantations that we cut, were planted on top of poor sandy soil where no other trees would grow. Red pine thrive in these conditions. After 80-100 years of pine needles falling and decaying on the forest floor, there is enough nutrients in the soil to sustain other types of trees. A great example of this forest management would be the east side of Wilson Drive in Anten Mills ON. Where there was once a Red pine plantation, there is now a young mixed species forest. Check out the pics at the bottom of this page.
